Gifts for the hiking family

We thought it would be helpful and fun to suggest some gift ideas for hikers of all ages and situations; from a family hiking with an infant or toddler to an adult aspiring to hike the OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAppalachian Trail, and all those in between. We paired the suggested items with my books, like matching the best wine with your favorite food. Happy shopping!

For parents with an infant (birth to six months) or expecting parents:  Give them the tools to share nature with their newborn.

–Surprise them with a quality infant carrier from companies such as Baby Bjorn or Ergo baby.

–Add a copy of my book, Get Your Kids Hiking: How to Start Them Young and Keep it Fun and bookmark the chapter on hiking with infants.

For parents with a baby/toddler:  Your child is more alert and ready to ride in a carrier on your back.

–Give them a quality child carrier from respected gear suppliers such as Deuter, Kelty and Osprey. This will allow parents the ability to carry their child OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAon endless hikes from 6 months of age to three years.

–Add a copy of my book, Get Your Kids Hiking: How to Start Them Young and Keep it Fun and bookmark the chapter: Precious Pounds on Your Back.

For parents of a preschooler or school age child: Your Kids are now leading you down the trail. Give them some gear to keep it fun.

–Try a small adventure pack for the 3-5 year old filled with items to interact with the outdoors like play binoculars, a bug catcher, a survival whistle, a compass, a picture book about nature, etc.

–Try a daypack for the school aged child and fill it with practical items like a camera, wilderness identification guides, hydration hose system, compass, etc.

–Add a copy of my book, Get Your Kids Hiking: How to Start Them Young and Keep it Fun, and bookmark Chapters 4 & 5.

Gifts for the national park enthusiast: Treat your outdoor family to a few unique gifts that will help them enjoy their favorite destination.

–A membership to their favorite national park association will be much appreciated. For example: The Great Smoky Mountain Association and the Shenandoah National Park Association send out magazines, newsletters and they offer member discounts  at park gift shops. Plus, you will help your favorite parks recover from the financially devastating government shut down.  Check with your favorite park to purchase a membership.

–Add a copy of my Appalachian Trail book, A Walk for Sunshine.

Gifts for the Appalachian Trail Hiker: Help your adventurer prepare for their next section or thru hike.

–Give them a membership to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the primary resource for hiking the Appalachian Trail.

–Add a copy of my Appalachian Trail book, A Walk for Sunshine.

–They will really appreciate the complete Official Guide sets of the entire Appalachian Trail.

Happy Hiking Holidays!
