Author, adventurer, and story teller Jeff Alt takes you along with him on a 2,000 mile hike along the Appalachian Trail in this documentary, with hilarious and engaging tales, stunning photography, and music.

Jeff Alt walked over 5 million steps buoyed by the knowledge that his walk was dedicated to his brother who has cerebral palsy.

  • His pack weighed 50 pounds.
  • He used three pairs of boots.
  • He averaged 17 miles a day.
  • He filtered water along the way.
  • He had 22 caches shipped along the way.
  • He slept in shelters and a tent.
  • His journey took 147 days.

Alt shares humorous and hair-raising animal encounters of sleeping with a skunk, being charged by a bear, chased by a bull, wild ponies, moose, mice, and many more.

Alt shares hilarious food cravings from the trail—the tree branch looked like New York Strip, the dirt kicked in with the snow looked like Oreo cookie ice-cream. You will learn how he ate a large pizza as a snack, a dozen donuts before breakfast and still lost 30 pounds from burning 4-6,000 calories a day on the trail—the equivalent of running two marathons a day.

Alt’s adventure inspired an annual Walk-With-Sunshine 5k event which has raised over $400,000 for the Sunshine Home where his brother lives. Based on Alt’s award-winning book, A Walk for Sunshine.

This documentary is based on Alt’s award-winning book. Alt’s narration is told in a polished story telling format which is deeply rooted in the tradition of the Appalachian culture. A Walk For Sunshine is pleasantly accented with Appalachian folk hymns throughout the film performed on a hammered dulcimer, an instrument steeped in Appalachian tradition. A Walk For Sunshine captures the trail experience with stunning original Appalachian Trail photography.

A Walk For Sunshine is an entertaining adventure full of examples of perseverance, survival, goal-setting success, and overcoming obstacles. A Walk For Sunshine will fill viewers with inspiration to go after their dreams. Alt includes life lessons he learned from his time on the trail and how he has applied them to his life in the years since his adventure.

Alt’s Life Lessons from the Trail stresses the importance of getting outdoors and including the whole family—especially children—in outdoor activities to foster an appreciation of nature, to nurture the importance of good stewardship of the earth, and to get everyone up and moving for good health. Alt caps off the movie by providing gear lists and tips for the beginning hiker, and for taking your children hiking. Transfer yourself from the theater onto the trail!
